I Can't Zoom Very Far or Auto Focus Up Close With My Lens

I Can't Zoom Very Far or Auto Focus Up Close With My Lens

I have a Canon Eos 1000D DSLR body with a Canon zoom USM EF 35-80mm 1:4-5.6 lens, this might just be me and my lack of experience (probably is) but I can't auto focus on anything up close, even using the up close settings on the camera, etc.

I was wondering if this is because I'm using a telephoto lens... And if so can I get a macro attachment to add on?

Also, I got this lens second hand for £50 but the images don't seem to be amazing quality, I have a 10mpxl small digital camera which zooms much further than this lens seems to, and takes better quality images... What am I doing wrong? X

That is normal for your lens
by: Mark McKnight

That is normal for your lense. With the Canon 1000d and that lense, the best photography for you to practise is portraits. If you want to zoom further, you would need something like a 70-300mm lense or a 18-200mm lense.

If you want to focus on something up close, you could try getting a dedicated marco lense.
